GUWAHATI: The first session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly began on Thursday, May 21, marking the formal commencement of the new government’s term following the recently concluded Assembly elections.

The four-day session, scheduled to continue till May 26, began with the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected MLAs under the leadership of Pro-tem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary.
Among those taking oath was Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who described the occasion as an honour in a post on X.
“Truly humbled to take oath as a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly for the 6th consecutive term as a representative of the people of Jalukbari. It is an honour to serve in this august House. I look forward to healthy deliberations with my fellow MLAs,” Sarma wrote.
Following the oath-taking process, the Assembly is expected to move towards the election of its permanent Speaker. The ruling alliance has proposed the name of MLA Ranjit Kumar Das for the post.
The session is also expected to witness the introduction of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. The Assam Government is likely to table the legislation on the final day of the session, May 26, after the State Cabinet approved the draft bill during its first meeting on May 13.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also indicated that the expansion of the State Cabinet is likely to take place after the conclusion of the Assembly session.
