The court had earlier reserved its order after hearing arguments presented by Mahanta’s counsel on May 22. The latest rejection comes after a fast track court had previously turned down his bail plea, dealing another setback to his efforts to secure release during the ongoing legal proceedings.
The matter was heard before the bench of Justice Mitali Thakuria, which rejected the bail petition following the hearing.
Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Ziaul Kamar reportedly stated that another accused in the case, Siddharth, has also filed a bail petition. However, the matter has not yet been listed for hearing.
Earlier this week, the court framed charges against all the accused, formally initiating the trial process in the high-profile case. The charges were framed on the basis of the chargesheet submitted earlier by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with the court finalising the sections under which the trial will proceed.
The court has fixed June 8 as the next date of hearing in the matter, during which witnesses are likely to be examined as part of the ongoing trial proceedings.
Those facing trial in the case include Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Amrit Prava Mahanta, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Sandipon Garg, Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Borah.
