Amid growing concerns around mental health and addiction in Assam, Athena Behavioral Health has launched what it describes as Northeast India’s largest integrated private psychiatric hospital in Guwahati. With this expansion, the organisation now operates five treatment centres across the country.
Located near Kaziranga English Academy in Garoo-ghuli, Garchuk, the facility will offer 24×7 admission and clinical support services.
The hospital opens at a time when mental health concerns are becoming increasingly visible across the state. According to the National Mental Health Survey, nearly 8 percent of Assam’s population, roughly one in every 12 people, experiences some form of mental health morbidity.
Experts say the Northeast has seen a steady rise in depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse and suicide-related distress in recent years. However, the region continues to face a shortage of structured psychiatric hospitals, certified de-addiction centres and long-term rehabilitation facilities.
Athena Behavioral Health said the Guwahati centre aims to bridge this gap by offering integrated treatment for psychiatric conditions and substance use disorders under one roof.
Addressing the media, Nimesh G. Desai, Director of Clinical Governance at Athena Behavioral Health and former Director of the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, said, “Covid highlighted the importance of mental health, but the science behind mental healthcare has existed for over 100 years. Mental illnesses are influenced by the mind, brain, body, family and society. In India, nearly 10–12% of people experience mental health disorders, yet around 80% do not seek treatment.”
Desai stressed the need for accessible and ethical mental healthcare systems that go beyond awareness campaigns and provide continuity of care.
The hospital will offer services including psychiatric consultations, psychotherapy, medical detoxification, rehabilitation programmes and long-term recovery planning. According to the authorities, the centre will treat conditions such as alcohol and substance addiction, depression, anxiety disorders, trauma and co-occurring psychiatric illnesses through structured treatment protocols and multidisciplinary care teams.
The facility has also introduced Athena’s women-only psychiatric care programme in the region, focusing on gender-specific clinical and recovery needs often overlooked in India’s mental healthcare system.
Mental health professionals have highlighted the Northeast’s growing addiction burden, particularly alcohol use disorders, along with limited access to trained addiction psychiatrists and rehabilitation support.
Athena said its Guwahati branch will follow integrated care pathways combining therapy, family engagement and evidence-based recovery models to treat mental illness and addiction simultaneously. The organisation also plans to conduct awareness and outreach programmes across the region to reduce stigma and encourage early treatment.
Founded in 2021 with a single hospital in Gurgaon, Athena Behavioral Health has expanded into a multi-city mental health and addiction treatment network focused on evidence-based care.
