The board also said that students currently studying in Classes 7, 8 and 9 who have already chosen two foreign languages can continue with the same. However, they will have to study one additional Bhartiya Bhasha (Indian language).
CBSE further clarified that these students will not have to appear for a Class 10 board examination in the third language when they reach Class 10.
As per the new policy, students joining Class 9 in the future will study three languages, of which at least two must be Bhartiya Bhashas, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The board said it will provide grade-appropriate study materials to schools and students in a timely manner to support the implementation of the policy.
"While CBSE aims to help students learn multiple Bhartiya Bhashas and promote language learning, it is equally committed to ensuring that the learning process remains balanced," the board said.
Examples of Bhartiya Bhashas include Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia and Sanskrit, while English, French, German, Arabic and Spanish are considered non-Bhartiya languages under the policy.
