300-Metre Iron Bridge Washed Away by Floodwaters in Assam's Dhemaji, Connectivity Severed

GUWAHATI: A 300-metre-long iron bridge over the Kemi River connecting Kemi and Oyan in Assam's Dhemaji district was washed away by strong floodwaters on Sunday, June 28 cutting off road connectivity between the Kemi-Purana Jelom area and Jonai Sadar.

The bridge, which served as a vital link for thousands of residents, collapsed after the river swelled rapidly following heavy inflow of water from neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. The incident has disrupted transportation and daily movement, leaving many residents stranded and raising concerns over access to essential services during the ongoing flood situation.

According to local residents, the river's water level began rising sharply around 11:00 am and intensified within minutes. By around 11:30 am, the overflowing river swept away the bridge.

Residents said the iron bridge had been constructed about a year ago. They alleged that concerns had been raised during its construction, as the Kemi River is known for its strong currents during the monsoon. According to locals, they had demanded a permanent concrete bridge instead, fearing that an iron structure would not withstand heavy floods.

The collapse has also affected education in the area. Residents said students from Kemi depend on the bridge to reach the only school serving the region. With examinations approaching and floodwaters expected to remain high, parents and locals have expressed concern over students' ability to attend classes.

Agricultural activities have also been hit, with farmers now facing difficulties in crossing the river to reach their fields during the peak farming season.

No official statement had been issued on restoration work or alternative connectivity at the time of filing this report.
