GUWAHATI: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has introduced major reforms to India’s higher-education accreditation system under the National Education Policy 2020, shifting the emphasis from periodic grading toward continuous institutional improvement.

Under the revised framework, NAAC will adopt a Binary Accreditation model to bring more colleges and universities within the quality-assurance net. Institutions will later transition to Maturity-Based Graded Levels (MBGL), which will reflect their progress in achieving higher standards over time.
The reforms emphasise student learning outcomes, research and innovation, governance, digital transformation, and accountability. They also aim to reduce procedural complexity and improve transparency through a technology-based assessment process. In Assam, officials expect the changes to encourage institutions to strengthen internal quality systems and raise overall academic performance.
