In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said some Indian citizens had travelled to Nepal for the pilgrimage through private tour operators without obtaining the necessary travel documents required to enter China. It advised citizens not to commence their journey from India until all documents required for the complete yatra have been obtained, warning that travelling without confirmed documentation or in anticipation of securing permits later could result in pilgrims being stranded.

The MEA also urged pilgrims to verify that their tour operator is duly registered and authorised before booking the yatra. It said Indian citizens travelling to Kailash Mansarovar are currently stranded in Kathmandu and have sought urgent assistance for their safe onward journey.

The advisory comes days after the first batch of pilgrims undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 crossed into China through the India-China border at Nathu La Pass on June 20.
