GUWAHATI: Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday, May 7, informed C. Joseph Vijay that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has not yet demonstrated the required majority support in the State Legislative Assembly to form the government.

According to an official press release issued from Lok Bhavan on Thursday, the Governor conveyed this during a meeting with Vijay, who had been invited for discussions. This marked the second consecutive day of meetings between the two leaders, following Vijay’s visit to the Governor on Wednesday.
The development comes amid intense political activity in the state after the assembly election results. TVK, which emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member House, is still short of the majority mark of 118.
While the Indian National Congress has extended its support to TVK, the party still requires five more legislators to stake claim to form the government. Attention has now turned to parties such as the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the VCK, which are yet to decide on extending support.
Leaders of these parties held consultations with M. K. Stalin on Thursday, further fuelling speculation over potential alliances.
In the current assembly composition, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has secured 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 47. Other parties, including PMK, IUML, CPI, CPI(M), BJP, DMDK, and AMMK, have smaller representations.
