GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has announced plans to seek UNESCO recognition for key heritage sites and cultural treasures of the state as part of its efforts to preserve and promote Assam's rich legacy.

Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah made the announcement while presenting the Assam Budget 2026–27 in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, July 10.
Under the proposal, the government will initiate the process to nominate the Monolithic Jars of Dima Hasao and the Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble for inclusion in the UNESCO Tentative List.
The Budget also proposes to secure international recognition for Assam's documentary heritage by targeting the 'Hastividyarnava' and 'Kathi-Ban Seng' manuscripts for inscription in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register by 2027 and 2029, respectively.
The initiative is aimed at preserving Assam's indigenous traditions and historical heritage while enhancing their visibility on the global stage.
