GUWAHATI: The Assam Government informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday, July 10, that more than 28 per cent of sanctioned posts in the state's government medical colleges and hospitals are lying vacant.

Replying to a question from Congress MLA Baby Begum, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal said Assam's 14 government medical colleges and hospitals have 14,754 sanctioned posts, of which 4,232 remain vacant.
Responding to another question by Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar, the minister said the vacancies include 297 teaching posts, comprising professors, associate professors and assistant professors.
The minister also shared details on patient load in government medical colleges. In response to a question from BJP MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Singhal said the institutions collectively treat around 15,205 patients every day.
Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) records the highest daily footfall with 3,246 patients, followed by Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, with around 1,800 patients, and Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) with approximately 1,500 patients daily. The medical colleges at Jorhat, Barpeta and Dhubri each attend to more than 1,000 patients every day.
Answering a separate question from Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Singhal said the combined annual intake capacity** of Assam's 14 medical colleges is 1,825 MBBS students. GMCH and AMCH, Dibrugarh have the highest intake, admitting 250 students each annually.
The minister further informed the House that 10 new medical colleges and hospitals are under construction, with the facilities at Bongaigaon, Biswanath and Charaideo nearing completion.
