Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay’s Assam Visit Reinforces Bilateral Ties, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma


 

GUWAHATI: The visit of Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to Assam on Monday, May 25, has further strengthened the longstanding relationship between Bhutan and the northeastern state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday, May 26.

Reacting to Tobgay’s post on X following his visit to Guwahati, Sarma expressed gratitude for the Bhutanese leader’s visit and highlighted Assam’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the Himalayan nation.

“Thank you for your wonderful visit and the meaningful discussions,” Sarma wrote on X, adding that Assam values its “multifaceted partnership with Bhutan” and looks forward to strengthening the bond further in the coming days.

The Chief Minister also expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation between Assam and Bhutan would continue to expand under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier in the day, Tobgay shared details of his meetings with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to Guwahati. He stated that the leaders had “reaffirmed our shared commitment to further strengthening the close and enduring ties between Bhutan and Assam”.

The Bhutanese Prime Minister arrived in Guwahati on Monday and was accorded a formal welcome by the Assam Governor and the Chief Minister, reflecting the close diplomatic, cultural and economic relationship shared between Assam and Bhutan.

Following his arrival, Tobgay visited the State Guest House at Koinadhora, where he was received by Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora.

Welcoming the visiting dignitary, Bora described the Assam-Bhutan relationship as one rooted in “mutual trust, harmony and deep socio-cultural ties”. He said the friendship between the two countries has strengthened over generations through people-to-people connections, shared traditions and cooperation across multiple sectors.

The minister also expressed optimism that the Bhutan Prime Minister’s visit would pave the way for enhanced cultural exchange, regional cooperation and economic growth between Assam and Bhutan.

Senior officials, including Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh and General Administration Department Secretary Narsing Pawar, were also present during the reception ceremony.
