GUWAHATI: In a significant political shift in Assam, former Congress heavyweights Bhupen Borah and Pradyut Bordoloi—who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) just days ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections—have emerged victorious in their respective constituencies.

Bhupen Borah, contesting from Bihpuria, secured a clear win over Congress candidate Narayan Bhuyan by a margin of 8,236 votes. Borah polled 73,050 votes, while Bhuyan garnered 64,814. Other candidates in the fray included Diganta Gogoi of the Voters Party International, who received 854 votes, and Independent candidate Hemen Gogoi, who secured 532 votes.
In Dispur, Pradyut Bordoloi registered a landslide victory against Congress nominee Mira Borthakur Goswami, winning by a margin of 49,667 votes. Bordoloi secured 1,03,337 votes compared to Goswami’s 53,670. Independent candidate Jayanta Kumar Das, who had earlier parted ways with the BJP, polled 22,802 votes, while Aam Aadmi Party’s Ballav Patra received 1,323 votes.
Their induction into the BJP fold and being given tickets had generated disgruntlement among a section of the party members both in Bihpuria and Dispur. In Dispur, particularly, a senior BJP member, Jayanta Das, parted ways with the party and contested the election as an Independent candidate triggering speculation that the development may help the Congress candidate by dividing BJP votes, which did not happen. However, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was confident both would win, and Bordoloi would by a margin of over 50, 000 votes, which all but came true.
Both Borah and Bordoloi were prominent figures in the Congress party and had held key responsibilities in previous Congress-led governments under former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Their recent switch to the BJP and subsequent victories mark a notable development in the state’s political landscape.
With their electoral success now secured under a new party banner, attention will turn to the roles the BJP may assign to the two leaders in the coming days.
