In a press release issued on May 15, the agency described ABHAY as an AI-Based Helpbot for Authentication of CBI notices and termed it the first real-time notice verification system of its kind developed to combat cyber-enabled fraud.
The system has been introduced amid growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence, deepfakes and impersonation tactics by cybercriminals. According to the CBI, fraudsters are increasingly using fake notices and fabricated legal threats to deceive people into believing they are under investigation by law enforcement agencies.
The agency said one of the most alarming forms of cybercrime currently being reported is the so-called “digital arrest” scam, in which fraudsters impersonate officials, accuse victims of criminal involvement and force them into prolonged online surveillance and compliance under the pretext of a fake legal process.
The CBI clarified that there is no legal concept of “digital arrest” in Indian law and urged citizens not to panic or comply with such demands.
To verify the authenticity of notices issued in the name of the CBI, citizens can access ABHAY through the agency’s official website, CBI official website. Users are required to complete OTP-based mobile verification and upload a scanned copy of the notice received. The chatbot then analyses the document and informs the user whether the notice appears genuine or potentially fraudulent.
The CBI also cautioned the public against fraudulent investment schemes and impersonation calls made in the name of law enforcement or regulatory agencies. It advised citizens to immediately report suspicious activity through appropriate authorities or cybercrime reporting platforms.
Reiterating its commitment to tackling cybercrime, the agency said strict legal action would be taken against individuals and entities involved in facilitating cyber fraud through misuse of banking and telecom infrastructure.
