Replying to a question by BJP MLA from Katigorah, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on the opening day of the ongoing Budget Session of Assam Legislative Assembly on July 6, Monday, the minister said that the proposal relating to setting up a circuit bench and a permanent bench in Barak Valley has already been referred to the Registrar General of Gauhati High Court.

“It is presently under its (Gauhati High Court) consideration. Further action by the government shall be taken on the receipt of the views and recommendations of the High Court in accordance with the applicable constitutional legal provisions,” the minister said.

Asserting that the distance between Barak Valley and Guwahati is about 330-400 kilometres, the BJP legislator said it was necessary to set up a high court bench in the region which has about 35 lakh population (as per 2011 census).

The BJP legislator also informed the House that Barak Valley has about 4,000 pending cases, making a case for an urgent need of a high court bench.

The minister further said that the government is committed to fulfilling its promises of setting up the high court benches in Silchar and Dibrugarh.

BJP, in its 2026 Assam elections manifesto, had promised to establish High Court benches in Dibrugarh and Silchar, to improve access to justice.
