Cab Drivers to Protest in Guwahati on June 10, Demand Revision of Fare Rates

GUWAHATI: The Assam State Drivers’ Association, in collaboration with the All Guwahati Cab Drivers’ Association, has announced a protest on June 10, pressing for several long-pending demands related to cab fare structures and drivers’ working conditions.

As part of the agitation, members of the associations will stage a gherao at the Transport Commissioner’s office. The organisations alleged that despite repeated appeals and sustained efforts over the years, the government has failed to address their concerns.

Addressing the media, the president of the Assam State Drivers’ Association stated that memorandums had been submitted to the Transport Department, district administration, and other relevant authorities. However, according to the association, no effective action has been taken so far.

The association also highlighted a significant decline in earnings for drivers. It claimed that while drivers received nearly ₹25 per kilometer during 2015–16, the rate has dropped to around ₹8–12 per kilometer in 2025–26, making it increasingly difficult for many to sustain their livelihoods.

The association further appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take steps to protect the interests of local drivers. It urged the government to address the challenges faced by indigenous drivers and ensure they receive adequate support.

The president also stated that grievances raised by drivers should be resolved by the concerned departments and added that if authorities are unable to do so, alternative employment opportunities should be provided to affected drivers.

The associations stated that hundreds of online cab drivers will join the protest on June 10 to press for their demands.
