A herd of wild elephants had entered the Deepor Beel area yesterday night, May 22. While crossing the wetland, a young calf got stranded in the water and lost contact with the herd. The elephants continued moving forward, leaving the calf behind.

The stranded calf was spotted by local fishermen early in the morning, following which, they alerted the authorities. Soon after, a team from the Wildlife and Forest Department reached the spot and launched a search operation. The calf was safely rescued from the middle of the beel and is currently being looked after by forest officials.

Efforts are being made to reunite the calf with its herd. The Forest Department is planning to release the calf back into the forest during the night, when the herd is expected to return to the area.
