According to a post on X, the drives targeted unauthorised occupations along roadsides and footpaths that were causing inconvenience to daily commuters and affecting the overall urban environment.
The civic body stated that encroachments on public spaces not only hamper smooth traffic movement but also create difficulties for pedestrians and emergency access in busy areas.
“Through regular monitoring and enforcement drives, GMC remains committed to maintaining smoother traffic flow and ensuring orderly civic spaces across Guwahati”, GMC said.
Earlier, GMC intensified eviction drives across several key congestion points in the city, with major focus on Fancy Bazaar, one of Guwahati’s busiest commercial hubs, in an effort to improve traffic movement and pedestrian accessibility.
GMC has been conducting similar eviction and enforcement drives across different parts of Guwahati in recent months to clear public spaces, regulate roadside encroachments and improve urban mobility.
The civic body stated that the initiative comes amid growing urbanisation, rising population pressure and increasing strain on public infrastructure in the city. According to GMC, maintaining orderly public spaces and unobstructed pedestrian pathways has become essential for ensuring smoother traffic movement and sustainable urban mobility in Guwahati.
