GUWAHATI: Drainage improvement work is currently underway on GNB Road, Guwahati, to address the recurring issue of waterlogging during heavy rainfall. Authorities have begun constructing saucer drains along the stretch as part of a flood mitigation initiative aimed at improving stormwater flow and reducing accumulation on the road.

Speaking on the development, an official from the Public Works Department (PWD) said the construction is being carried out based on the specific requirements of the road infrastructure. The official explained that the existing weep holes were aligned with the main road, causing them to become blocked over time due to debris, mud, and road surface buildup.
“As the weep holes got clogged, rainwater could not pass through efficiently, leading to frequent waterlogging on the road,” the official stated.
The newly constructed saucer drains are expected to create a smoother drainage channel, allowing rainwater to flow out more effectively and preventing stagnation, particularly during the monsoon season. Residents and commuters have long raised concerns over flooding on GNB Road, which often leads to traffic congestion and inconvenience. Authorities believe the new drainage system will offer a more sustainable solution to the issue.
