GUWAHATI: India's T20I captaincy is set for another change, with Suryakumar Yadav reportedly removed from the leadership role ahead of the team's upcoming tours of Ireland and England later this month, according to reports.

Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in consultation with the team management and selection committee, is expected to appoint a new captain for the next T20I cycle. India are scheduled to play two T20 Internationals in Ireland followed by a five-match T20I series in England.
Suryakumar was appointed India's T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format following India's T20 World Cup triumph in 2024. Under his leadership, India recently secured their third T20 World Cup title in March 2026.
However, reports indicate that concerns over Suryakumar's batting form have influenced the decision. The 35-year-old endured a difficult IPL 2026 campaign, scoring 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76. Although he ended the season with a half-century against the Rajasthan Royals, his overall returns remained below expectations.
His performances during the T20 World Cup also came under scrutiny despite India's title-winning campaign. Suryakumar scored 242 runs in nine matches at an average of 30.25, with his highest score being an unbeaten 84 against the United States national cricket team in Mumbai.
While an official announcement from the BCCI is awaited, reports suggest that Suryakumar may not only lose the captaincy but could also find it difficult to retain a place in India's T20I squad going forward.
