The protest in Guwahati was jointly organised by the Kamrup (Metro) District Student Union and the Guwahati Student Union, while similar demonstrations were held at district headquarters across the state.

Several senior AASU leaders, including chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya, president Utpal Sarma, general secretary Samiran Phukan, Kamrup (Metro) District Student Union President Dipjyoti Malakar, and general secretary Samiran Kalita, along with hundreds of members, participated in the protest programme in the city.

Addressing the gathering, the student leaders alleged that prices of essential commodities such as rice, pulses, edible oil, onions, potatoes, kerosene, and medicines have increased abnormally, putting immense pressure on common people. They also pointed out that transportation costs have surged due to the rise in fuel prices, while house rents in Guwahati have become unaffordable. According to the leaders, small businesses including hotels, restaurants, and tea stalls are struggling to survive amid the inflationary pressure.

The protesters further claimed that school and college hostels are facing difficulties due to the continuous rise in prices. They also expressed concern over the frequent hikes in petrol and diesel prices and the declining value of the Indian rupee.

Taking a direct dig at the government, AASU president Utpal Sarma said, “After the NDA returned to power with an absolute majority, price hikes should not have been the first gift to the people of Assam.” He also questioned the government’s expenditure during election campaigns in five states, alleging that large amounts of money were spent on vehicles and political events instead of addressing public concerns.

Speaking to the media, Kamrup (Metro) District Student Union General Secretary Samiran Kalita said that more than 700 people participated in the Guwahati protest, carrying placards and raising slogans against both the State and Central governments. Protesters shouted slogans such as “Asom Sarkar Hai Hai” and “Bharat Sarkar Hai Hai” during the rally.

The protest march began from Swahid Nyas Bhawan in Uzan Bazaar, proceeded towards Uzan Bazaar Chariali and Jor Pukhuri, and later returned to Swahid Nyas Bhawan.
