Assam Cabinet Expansion on June 5, Announces Himanta Biswa Sarma


 

GUWAHATI: The Assam Council of Ministers will be expanded on June 5, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday, May 31, setting the stage for the induction of several MLAs into the BJP-led NDA government's ministry.

Announcing the decision on X, Sarma said, "I am pleased to inform that the Council of Ministers of the Government of Assam will be expanded on 5 June 2026."

According to reports, eight to nine legislators are likely to be sworn in as Cabinet ministers, while two Ministers of State may also be inducted. The expansion is expected to include a mix of experienced leaders and new faces from different regions of the state.

The move comes less than a month after the NDA returned to power for a third consecutive term in Assam. The new government was sworn in on May 12 following the Assembly elections.

At present, the ministry comprises Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and four Cabinet ministers. The upcoming expansion is expected to significantly increase the strength of the Council of Ministers.

In Assam's 126-member Assembly, the maximum permissible strength of the ministry is 19. 

The BJP-led NDA secured a sweeping victory in the Assembly elections, winning 102 of the 126 seats. The BJP won 82 seats, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), secured 10 seats each.
