GUWAHATI: Assam is likely to witness a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of waterlogging, localised flooding, landslides and traffic disruptions as active weather systems continue to influence the region.

According to the IMD, rain is expected across most parts of Assam and Meghalaya through July 16. Very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Assam on July 11, while heavy rainfall has been forecast from July 12 to 16. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely till July 14.

The weather department said the prevailing conditions are being influenced by upper air cyclonic circulations over west Assam and northeast Assam in the lower tropospheric levels, along with other active synoptic weather systems affecting the region.

The IMD warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall may lead to localised flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, closure of underpasses in urban centres, reduced visibility, traffic disruptions, minor damage to kutcha roads and vulnerable structures, localised landslides or mudslides, damage to standing crops due to inundation, and riverine flooding in some catchment areas.

In view of the forecast, the IMD has advised residents to check traffic conditions before travelling, follow advisories issued by local authorities, avoid waterlogged and flood-prone areas, and refrain from staying in vulnerable structures during periods of heavy rainfall.

Rainfall activity is expected to continue across Assam and Meghalaya till July 16. The IMD has urged residents to remain alert, monitor weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
