The three-year mission, to be implemented from 2026 to 2028, aims to enhance production, improve quality, strengthen value addition, and position Assam’s famed golden silk competitively in global markets.
The programme was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita and Minister of State for DoNER Sukanta Majumdar, among others.
The mission will be implemented through collaboration among 11 stakeholders, including the Ministry of DoNER, the Assam Government, the Ministry of Textiles, the Ministry of Cooperation, APEDA, ICAR, DRDO and representatives from weaving and rearing communities. As part of the project, five modern reeling units will be established in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Sualkuchi, Majuli and Lakhimpur, while a dedicated Muga spun silk unit will be set up in Dhemaji to strengthen processing and value-addition capabilities.
Addressing the gathering, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the mission is expected to support the Muga Silk sector, which is closely associated with Assam’s cultural heritage. He said the initiative could help improve production and create new economic opportunities for those involved in the industry. Sarma also noted that the Geographical Indication (GI) tag has provided Muga Silk with a distinct identity, and said the project aims to further strengthen the sector’s production and market reach.
