GUWAHATI: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers, with President Droupadi Murmu accepting his resignation with immediate effect.

In a communique issued on Tuesday, June 23, the President accepted Kurian’s resignation under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kurian, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Kerala, represented Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha after being elected in a by-election in 2024. His term ended on June 21, and the BJP did not renominate him in the recent Rajya Sabha elections.
Alongside his responsibilities in the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Kurian also served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
Kurian is among the Union ministers whose terms in the Upper House concluded this month and who were not renominated for the Rajya Sabha elections held on June 18. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu was also not renominated.
