GUWAHATI: A traffic police official posted near the Ganeshguri Flyover Traffic Point area was caught allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹2,500 around 11:30 AM on Sunday, June 21, locals say, in an incident that quickly drew a large crowd to the spot.

According to residents who witnessed the confrontation, the official who asked for a bribe in return for not filing an online challan after a vehicle with AS13 registration violated traffic rules. The official was stopped and questioned on the spot after being accused of demanding the money, with the gathering crowd raising the issue loudly enough to draw wider attention to the incident.
Responding to the public outcry, the Deputy Commissioner of Traffic addressed the matter in a press briefing, announcing that the officer has been immediately suspended from duty and that a departmental investigation into the allegations will be carried out.
The Commissioner also made it clear that the traffic police do not accept online challan payment and only issues online challans. He urged the public to report any cases of such offline challan.
The Commissioner's swift action is being seen as an attempt to reassure residents that complaints of corruption among traffic personnel are being taken seriously, even as questions remain about how widespread such practices may be in the area.
