The order stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred upon the Governor under sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal, Shri R. N. Ravi, has issued an Order dissolving the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from 07 May 2026.”

The Assembly, which was constituted in May 2021 after the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee secured a third consecutive term, has now completed its tenure.

Under Article 172 of the Constitution, a state assembly stands dissolved after the completion of its five-year term, with the outgoing Council of Ministers continuing in a caretaker capacity until a new government assumes office.

Amid the political transition, Banerjee has stated that she will not resign from the post of Chief Minister while protesting the election results.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which secured a decisive mandate in the recently concluded assembly elections, is expected to form the next government, with its cabinet scheduled to take oath on Saturday.
