GMC Warns of ₹25,000 Spot Fine for Blocking Drains, Issues Public Notice on Sanitation Violations


 

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued a public notice on Monday, July 6, introducing a schedule of spot fines for various sanitation-related offences across the city, with penalties ranging from ₹300 to ₹25,000. The initiative aims to strengthen enforcement of civic regulations and promote cleanliness in Guwahati.

As per the notified schedule, the highest spot fine of ₹25,000 will be imposed for blocking the natural flow of water in drains by dumping materials. A fine of ₹5,000 has been prescribed for the illegal disposal of chemical waste within GMC limits and for pasting posters on public property such as government walls, electric poles, bridges and drain fencing.

The notice also states that illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste and the illegal disposal of faecal sludge or septage will attract a ₹2,000 spot fine each. Dumping fish, poultry or slaughterhouse waste in the open, as well as burning waste or littering that affects rivers, drains and wetlands, will invite a penalty of ₹1,000.

Meanwhile, offences including littering, public urination, open defecation, illegal dumping of waste, the use of banned plastic carry bags and prohibited single-use plastic items, and improper disposal of animal waste will attract a ₹500 spot fine. Spitting in public places has been fixed at ₹300.

GMC said the spot fine schedule has been introduced to ensure compliance with sanitation norms and encourage citizens to maintain a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city.
