GUWAHATI: Indian athletics witnessed a landmark day at the Federation Cup Athletics Championships in Ranchi on Saturday, May 24, as sprinters Gurvinder Singh and Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi produced record-breaking performances in the men’s 100m and 400m events respectively.

Twenty-five-year-old Gurvinder Singh stunned the field in the men’s 100m final by clocking an incredible 10.09 seconds, setting a new national record and emerging as the fastest Indian sprinter in history. The Patiala-born athlete’s sensational run not only earned him the gold medal but also secured qualification for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
Training under renowned coach James Hillier, Gurvinder has shown remarkable progress over the past season. His early mentor, Sarabjit Singh, continues to remain closely involved in his development, playing a significant role in shaping the sprinter’s career.
The men’s 100m final also saw strong performances from the rest of the field. Kujur finished second with a timing of 10.20 seconds, while Pranav Promod claimed third place after clocking 10.29 seconds.
Moreover, in the men’s 400m final, Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi etched his name into the record books by becoming the first Indian man to break the elusive 45-second barrier.
Vishal stormed to victory with a sensational timing of 44.98 seconds, registering a new national record and marking a major milestone for Indian quarter-mile running.
