In a press release issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati on Monday, June 1, the weather department said maximum temperatures are likely to exceed 35 degrees Celsius at a few places in the state due to mainly clear to partly cloudy skies and strong solar insolation.
According to the IMD, maximum temperatures across Assam are expected to remain 3°C to 5°C above normal during the next two days. However, a gradual fall of 4°C to 6°C is likely in the subsequent days.
Among the recorded temperatures, Dhubri and Silchar registered the highest maximum temperature at 35.6°C on Sunday, while North Lakhimpur recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 23.3°C on Monday.
The IMD warned that the prevailing weather pattern of high temperatures and a rise in humidity levels could lead to “hot and humid” conditions in several districts of Assam. While the heat is expected to remain tolerable for the general public, the department cautioned that vulnerable groups — including infants, elderly persons, pregnant women, and those with existing illnesses — may face health risks.
The weather department also highlighted the possibility of heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses resulting from prolonged exposure to hot weather.
As part of its advisory, the IMD urged residents to wear lightweight cotton clothing, stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and use umbrellas or head coverings while outdoors. Farmers and outdoor workers have also been advised to minimise prolonged exposure to the sun.
