GUWAHATI: Opposition parties in Assam on Wednesday intensified their demand for a thorough investigation into the repeated accidents on the newly inaugurated Maharaj Prithu Flyover, with the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) seeking a high-level probe and the youth wing of Raijor Dal filing a police complaint demanding registration of an FIR.

At a press conference, APCC leaders alleged that technical flaws in the ₹852.68-crore flyover had turned it into a "death trap" and called for its temporary closure until safety concerns are addressed. The party also demanded action against the contractors, engineers and officials associated with the project, besides seeking an investigation into the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Meera Borthakur referred to the recent death of businessman Parimal Medhi in an accident on the flyover and questioned why the Public Works Department (PWD) and other authorities had failed to address complaints that the road surface became slippery during and after rainfall. She also alleged corruption in the execution of the project and claimed that certain contractors were being protected by the government.
Meanwhile, the Jatiya Yuba Bahini (JYB), the youth wing of Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal, lodged a complaint with the officer-in-charge of Noonmati Police Station, seeking registration of an FIR and an impartial investigation into the recurring accidents.
In the complaint, JYB president Gyanashree Borah and working president Sourav Borah alleged that several motorcycles and other vehicles had skidded on the flyover during and after rainfall, resulting in multiple accidents and serious injuries. Referring to media reports and videos circulating in the public domain, they urged the police to investigate whether deficiencies in road surfacing, skid resistance, drainage, construction quality or adherence to engineering specifications had contributed to the accidents.
The youth wing further demanded that the investigation extend beyond the executing contractors to include engineers, consultants, quality control agencies, project management consultants and government officials responsible for supervising, certifying and approving the project before it was opened to the public.
Among its demands, the JYB sought a technical assessment of the flyover's skid resistance, drainage and road surface quality by qualified experts, collection of CCTV footage, accident records and forensic evidence, and legal action against any individual or organisation found responsible. It also called for immediate remedial measures to improve commuter safety and prevent further accidents.
The 4.2-km Maharaj Prithu Flyover, the longest in the Northeast, connects Dighali Pukhuri with Noonmati along GNB Road. Constructed under the PWD by Gautam Construction Company Limited and Anupam Nirman Private Limited at a cost of Rs 852.68 crore, the project was inaugurated on March 10, 2026, after being completed ahead of schedule. However, a series of accidents reported on the flyover, particularly during rainfall, has triggered growing concerns over its safety and construction quality.
