The incident occurred when Memi Pao had taken cattle out for grazing and was suddenly attacked by a tiger that emerged from nearby bushes. On hearing her screams, three villagers, Ashwini Pegu, Devaranjan Kaman and Pepei Pegu, rushed to help but were also mauled by the animal during the rescue attempt.

Once the tiger moved away, local residents, along with forest department personnel, rescued the injured. As the village is located in a remote area, the victims were first transported by ferry to Alami village before being shifted in a 108 ambulance for medical treatment.

The injured were initially admitted to a nearby healthcare facility and were subsequently referred to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for specialised treatment. All four are reported to be in critical condition.

The attack took place under the jurisdiction of the Dergaon Forest Range. The incident has heightened concerns among residents over recurring incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the region, while forest officials are keeping a close watch on the situation.
